Why Is There A 38 Feet x 60 Feet “Cut-Out” On The Eastern End Of Pier 17?

Take a walk around the nearly complete, SHoP-designed Pier 17 complex and you may notice something odd – a “cut-out” in the middle of the eastern end of the pier deck measuring 38 feet x 60 feet.

The unique cut-out at the eastern end of the pier was incorporated by the design team to expose and provide greater connection to the water beneath.  Designers incorporated a 12 foot-wide path through the ground floor space to allow the public to easily circulate around the cut-out, under the canopy of the building.
